Sculptures at The Delicatessen
The Sculpture GardenThe Sculpture Garden at the TOKARA Delicatessen is a joint initiative between two significant forces on the South African art scene, both intimately connected to the specific psycho-geography of the Stellenbosch area: Anne-Marie Ferreira and Ilse Schermers. TOKARA Estate is owned by GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira, it is named after their two children – Thomas and Kara. Situated high on the crest of the Helshoogte pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, TOKARA produces elegant wines, a small quantity of five-year old pot still brandy, as well as award winning olive oils. Over time the estate has also accumulated an impressive collection of various local works, representing South Africa’s established and emerging talent. Their commitment to this project generated an infectious enthusiasm and generosity amongst all involved.
Equally, as the owner of The Dorp Street Gallery in Stellenbosch for fifteen years, the contemporary art gallery on the Grande Provence Estate and now the curator of IS Art at Le Quartier Français, Ilse Schermers has made an indelible contribution to the manner in which the Cape Winelands is conceived of in the popular imagination as an artistic hub. The inaugural exhibition was opened in October 2011 and included the works of the following celebrated South African sculptors: Andries Botha, David Brown, Marco Cianfanelli, Jacques Dhont, Wilma Cruise, Guy du Toit, Isabel Mertz, Sarel Petrus, Ian Redelinghuys, Desmond Smart, Nicolene Swanepoel, Lionel Smit, Angus Taylor, Egon Tania and Strijdom van der Merwe. Ilse Schermers will curate a solo exhibition for some of these artists in the months to follow the inaugural show.
